Photo Diary: Legazpi City, Albay, Philippines – the town

“After days in Catanduanes and a detour in Tabaco City, my next stop was Legaspi City, the Capital of Albay Province. I was lost but manage to find the way to the hostel. My first day was tiring and fulfilling able to visit a new place and experience it’s soul. For the second day I was able to visit nearby towns, I just planned to stay here for 3 days but was extended to another day due to the Typhoon that ravage the region.”

A Brief History of Legazpi City, Albay

Legazpi started as a barangay called Sawangan (the present location of Legazpi Port). Its inhabitants were mostly fishermen and farmers. In 1587, Franciscan friars of the Doctrina of Cagsawa began to convert the settlement to Christianity; in 1616, they transformed it into a separate town and parish called “Albay.” Its first parish priest built a small chapel and established the “Mission de San Gregorio Magno de Sawangan.” Source: https://legazpi.gov.ph/history-of-legzpi/
